Alphonso 'King of Mangoes'

Nature
Blog - Alphonso King of Mangos

How can a mango capture the look and feel of summer you may ask? From green and orange to sunshine yellow, here at Yeo Valley Organic, we love anything organic! Let’s grab a spoon and travel away from our British shores to vibrant India, the leading mango producer in the world, where we visited one of our organic suppliers that harvest and process these beautiful, tasty fruits!

Celebrating the Mango

We believe it is important to celebrate the best mother nature has to offer and undoubtedly the Alphonso mango deserves a place on our tables (obviously in the form of one of our creamy yogurts!). But what makes them so special? If you have never tasted one before try closing your eyes and imagine a cross between a peach, apricot, nectarine and melon with hints of honey. Harvested when just ripe, typically between 5-13 days, these may well be the most high-quality mangoes but isn’t it crazy how a single fruit can pack such a punch? That’s why we are so passionate about using these golden gems in our products.

Sarah, from our ingredients buying team, recently visited India to meet our organic Mango supplier to see the care and passion that goes into growing these succulent mangoes. “Our trip allowed us to get out into the fields to understand what it takes to grow, transport and process these fruits, giving us the opportunity to connect with the ingredients used within our products’’.

How can you benefit?

Not only does the Alphonso mango deliver on taste but they are also packed full of vitamins, minerals and fibre to keep you happy on the inside and out! You are at the heart of the fruits we hand select and our aim is to help fuel your body with great things! Due to the mango’s delicate nature, it is not common to find them fresh on the supermarket shelves in the UK, so that’s why we spend our time sourcing fruits that we are proud to talk about. Let’s dive under the skin of a ripe mango and explore some of their benefits as it takes two to mango!

1. Boost hair and skin health – Alphonso mangoes contain vitamins A, C and E which are antioxidants needed for healthy hair and skin. An intake of these nutrients in your diet is so important.
2. Improved gut health – Mangoes are a good source of fibre which is essential for effective digestion. They feed the beneficial bacteria that live in your digestive system.

These fruits are more than just a tasty snack they have a treasure trove of health benefits so let’s raise a spoon to the King of Mangoes!

Bringing Fruits into the Valley

Harvested at the peak of ripeness the most popular way of eating Alphonso mangoes is pulped or thickened with milk or cream. At Yeo Valley Organic, we strive for great tasting yogurt with our products containing organic mango purée both in our Kefir range, and Little Yeos pouches.

Here’s what Kat from our ingredients team has to say “We source alphonso mangoes as they are considered ‘king of the mango’ in terms of their wonderful and unique flavour profile. The variety we source is predominantly grown in southern and western India where the land is protected from ever being used for commercial use, to protect the tree and plant species’’.
